Marginal pond plant
Water dock
Rumex hydrolapathum
A tall, clump-forming marginal perennial (1.5–2.5 m) for pond edges that likes moist soil or shallow water; wildlife-friendly but self-seeds and spreads from roots, so needs management.

PLANT PROFILE
About Water dock
Water dock (Rumex hydrolapathum) is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial commonly found at pond, river and canal margins. It favours moist, poorly drained ground or shallow water at the edge of waterbodies and tolerates full sun to partial shade. Plants are large: expect mature stems to reach about 1.5–2.5 m and a modest spread per clump, so allow space for a tall emergent in the margin.
For pond owners the species offers structural and foraging value: docks provide food and habitat for invertebrates and birds, and tall emergents supply cover and vertical structure for pond wildlife. The foliage is deciduous and dies back over winter. The plant is hardy (RHS H4) and is straightforward to establish in suitable marginal conditions, but it has a strong tendency to self-seed and spread vegetatively from roots, so control and ongoing management are important.
Introduce water dock as small rooted plants or cuttings pushed into sediment or into a V-trench in the margin (ensure part of the emergent remains above water during transfer). It can also propagate by seed, so removing or cutting seed heads before they set will reduce unwanted spread. Avoid adding nutrient-rich topsoil to margins, plant marginal species sparingly (guidance suggests modest planting densities such as around 2–5 plants/m² for many wetland species) and thin clumps early if plants begin to dominate. For very small garden ponds consider containment or avoid planting this species unless you can commit to regular thinning and removal of spreading roots.
Note: supplied sources describe the plant qualitatively as occurring in moist soil or shallow water but do not give numeric centimetre ranges for planting or water depths; consult local guidance if precise depth figures are required. Also consult current statutory lists if you need an authoritative legal clearance for sale or transfer.
