Marginal pond plant

Common water-plantain

Alisma plantago-aquatica

A native, rhizomatous marginal perennial for pond edges, Common water-plantain suits wildlife gardens and pond margins in shallow water up to 30 cm deep. It is easy to grow but can self-seed and become vigorous in small ponds.

PLANT PROFILE

About Common water-plantain

Common water-plantain (Alisma plantago-aquatica) is a native UK marginal perennial that forms tufts or rosettes of basal leaves with tall flowering panicles rising above the water. RHS and Freshwater Habitats Trust list it as a useful pond-margin species: it is typically planted at the pond edge in shallow water and is valued for providing edge structure and resources for pollinators and invertebrates.

Grow it at pond margins where water is up to 30 cm deep; planting guidance from FHT and RHS recommends using small rooted plants, rhizome divisions, turves or cuttings pushed into the sediment or a 'V' trench so that at least part of the plant remains above the water. It is rhizomatous and perennial, and foliage is deciduous with seasonal dieback of the emergent parts in winter.

Common water-plantain is generally straightforward to establish and is treated as robust and pest- and disease-free by RHS. It has wildlife value—being included in plant lists for pollinators and for creating habitat for pond invertebrates—but it can self-seed freely. RHS warns it “may become too invasive for small pools” and advises deadheading spent flowers to reduce self-seeding; FHT also highlights that vigorous emergent species need regular management in small or shallow, unmanaged ponds.

Propagation is by seed (sown as soon as ripe) or by rhizome division in spring; FHT encourages using local native stock where possible. Practical maintenance notes include removing excess seedlings or clumps if it begins to dominate, deadheading flowerheads to limit seeding, and avoiding addition of nutrient-rich topsoil across pond bottoms. Legislation and species lists consulted do not list Alisma plantago-aquatica as a restricted or prohibited invasive species, though related or rarer water-plantain taxa are treated separately in conservation and legal contexts.
